Za’atara

The great, cone-shaped hill of Herodium looms over the town of Za’atara like its faithful watcher. It is the highest peak in the Judean desert and visible for miles around. Beneath it Za’atara is spread over several smaller hills, with an eclectic mix of very old and very new architecture. It is an open, airy place with large gaps between homes.

Where the town meets Herodium, various remains of King Herod’s fortress are being excavated, along with the palace and small town he built here. However, a small illegal Israeli settlement has been built at the foot of the mountain which has now assumed control of the heritage site. Za’atara is located 10km southeast of Bethlehem.

What To Do

Where Za’atara ends beneath the striking hill of Herodium, there is a beautiful spot to visit, where pillars have been excavated, along with a large central well. The adjacent remains of Herod’s fortress have become a big visitor attraction. Otherwise, the town is open, airy and agricultural. It is also well-positioned in close proximity to both Bethlehem (10km) and Jerusalem (12km).

Where To Eat

For a variety of restaurants and cafes head into Bethlehem, 10km away, neighbouring Beit Sahour or Jerusalem.

Where To Stay

There is a range of hotels in the surrounding area for visitors to choose from, most located in either Bethlehem itself or Beit Sahour. Alternatively, Jerusalem is just 12km away.
