Qalandia
It is internationally known as the Israeli checkpoint which has seen decades of conflict, but Qalandia takes its name from this small, rather beautiful nearby village. Bordered by dense fir forests and with lush patches of olive groves, Qalandia feels worlds away from the chaotic checkpoint across the field. There are some wonderful historic stone buildings as well as an elegant mosque, which has two very attractive towers.
Qalandia is located between Jerusalem and Ramallah, and the outskirts of the latter are visible behind two Israeli walls. The land in between is controlled by the Israeli military. A refugee camp established in 1949 also takes the name Qalandia, housing Palestinian refugees from Jerusalem primarily.
